TFL: Mobiles on Tube 'not commercially viable'

Transport for London has stated that serious technological hurdles impeding the use of mobile phones on the Underground mean the recent pledge by the Government is not commercially viable.
The plan laid out in the recent Digital Britain report was to make sure that London's Underground transport system would be fully mobile friendly by the 2012 Olympics, being held in the same city

Time-to-Adoption: Two to Three Years

Over the past few years, mobiles have undergone a continual transformation, becoming more capable and flexible with each new release. The ability to record audio and video turned them into tiny multimedia devices; as storage capacity increased, they became the storehouses of our digital lives; and geolocation, web browsing, and email has brought much of the functionality of a laptop to the pocket-sized devices. Then, a year ago, another transformation took place. Devices with touch screen displays appeared on the market. These new mobiles can access the Internet over the increasingly higher-speed 3G networks or by using wifi, and they can sense motion and orientation and react accordingly thanks to built-in accelerometers. They can use GPS to locate themselves and can run robust applications. They communicate with other devices. Most significantly, their manufacturers are working with the developer community to open up the devices to all the innovation that third-party developers can bring.
New interfaces, the ability to connect to wifi and GPS in addition to a variety of cellular networks, and the availability of third-party applications have created an almost entirely new device with nearly infinite possibilities for education, networking, and personal productivity. The implications for education are dramatic: the potential for mobile gaming and simulation, research aids, fieldwork, and tools for learning of all kinds is there, awaiting development.

Another Google Innovation: Ebooks to Mobiles

Google is making its vast online library of books available for mobile phones.
“We are excited to announce the launch of a mobile version of Google Book Search, opening up over 1.5 million mobile public domain books in the US (and over half a million outside the US) for you to browse”, the company said.
The Internet search giant, in a post on Thursday on the Google Book Search blog, said mobile versions of the books could be read on devices such as the Apple iPhone or T-Mobile G1, which is powered by Google’s Android software.
“These new mobile editions are optimized to be read on a small screen,” Google said. “With this launch, we believe that we’ve taken an important step toward more universal access to books.”
To access the mobile version of Google Book Search a user needs to type http://books.google.com/m into the Web browser of their iPhone or Android phone.
Google’s announcement comes just days ahead of the expected unveiling by Amazon of a new generation version of its popular electronic book reader, the Kindle, at a New York press conference on Monday.
Amazon is also planning to make its online store of e-books for the Kindle available on mobile phones, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Feature Project Summary: Mobiles in Malawi

In the summer of 2008, an SMS-based communications network was implemented for a
rural hospital and its volunteer community health workers (CHWs) in Namitete, Malawi.
Located 60 km from Lilongwe, St. Gabriel’s Hospital serves 250,000 Malawians spread over a
catchment area 100 miles in radius. Distance presents an often-insurmountable obstacle for
patients seeking care at St. Gabriel’s. Many patients walk up to 100 miles to the hospital; those
with more resources ride bicycles or oxcarts. In order to report patient adherence, ask for medical
advice, or request medical care for remote clients, CHWs had to travel similar distances to the
hospital’s doors.
Josh Nesbit, a Senior in the Human Biology Program at Stanford University, traveled to
St. Gabriel’s with 100 recycled cell phones, a donated laptop and a copy of FrontlineSMS – a
free computer program developed to act as a central text message hub. Over 8 weeks, a total of
75 CHWs were called to the hospital, given cell phones, and trained in text messaging. The
volunteers’ locations were mapped, and the phones were disseminated throughout the catchment
area. Stationed at the hospital, a laptop running FrontlineSMS coordinates the health network’s
activities. The day-to-day program operations were handed over to hospital staff within two
weeks. Josh returned to St. Gabriel’s in December 2008, to distribute solar panels donated by
G24 Innovations, taking the SMS network off the grid.
As a result of the SMS network, the hospital now responds to requests for remote patient
care, tracks distant patients, informs CHWs of proper drug dosages and uses, receives patient
updates, facilitates CHW-to-CHW communication and group mobilization, connects HIVpositive
patients to support groups, and relays outreach HIV testing schedules. In six months, the
SMS program has saved the hospital staff 1200 hours of follow-up time and over $3,000 in
motorbike fuel. Nearly 1,400 patient updates have been processed via SMS. Over 100 patients
have started TB treatment after their symptoms were noticed by CHWs and reported by textmessage.
The SMS network has brought the Home-Based Care unit to the homes of 130 patients
who would not have otherwise received care. Texting has saved 21 antiretroviral therapy (ART)
monitors 900 hours of travel time, eliminating the need to hand-deliver paper reports.

Digital Britain: Mobiles Key to Universal Broadband Access

The Digital Britain report, published today, says mobile phones are the key to providing broadband Internet access for all. Noting that the next generation of mobile phones are developing PC functionality, and praising the mobile industry’s “extraordinary capacity to take complex technology and make it simple, reliable and low cost”, the report says: “Given time, low cost broadband mobile phones connected to the mobile broadband network have the best long term potential to ensure complete inclusion of all in the UK to the broadband Internet.”Elsewhere, the report states that universal broadband service delivery will be achieved through a mix of fixed and mobile, “with mobile ideally placed to make a contribution to the universal service commitment”.The report also acknowledges that there is a role for Government intervention in releasing new radio spectrum for a rapid roll out of LTE (Long term evolution) networks. It also notes an encouraging consensus among the incumbent mobile operators for mobile broadband networks to be based on 3G or LTE technology, but says this does not preclude a new entrant using other technologies, such as WiMAX. Given the highly competitive nature of the UK mobile radio market, however, the report concludes that: “it looks unnecessary to mandate the technology to be used for mobile Next Generation Networks.”On the subject of coverage, the report notes that there is near-universal coverage of GSM, but says: “the extensive coverage we now take for granted with GSM has not yet happened with 3G networks”. It notes that roughly 20% of the population do not have a choice of 3G network operator, and that the 90% who can access a 3G service have limited in-building coverage. The report goes on to say that the Government wants universal coverage for mobile broadband that matches the 99% coverage of GSM, and acknowledges that network sharing, reciprocal access and interconnection regimes are all means of achieving that level of coverage. It also commits to convert existing 3G licenses from time-limited to indefinite in order to give network operators certainty in being able to plan to achieve these coverage requirements.

Adaptive Path Blog

by Rachel Hinman
Who hasn’t felt the post-project blues? The emotional journey of any creative assignment is eerily similar:• the initial thrill of beginning a new and interesting project• the excitement of digging into the process and subject matter• inevitably becoming consumed by the design problem• losing one’s self and sanity in pursuit of excellence• the fatigue and disillusionment of the death march to the end• the joy of the finish• the hollow sense of emotional loss once it’s all over
Regardless of the role of consultant or in-house creative, I’m convinced any designer worth their salt has been through this emotional cycle countless times.
I’m currently suffering through a bought of the post-project blues. I recently rolled off an exciting, 8-month mobile project that focused on envisioning the future of mobile interfaces. The project was thrilling. Far and away the most interesting work I’ve done. But it came at a cost. I lost myself in the project; it consumed my thoughts and held me hostage for months. Now that it’s over, I feel that sense of sadness and loss. The project still haunts me.
A friend shared with me that he believes all good designers must be obsessed – addicted to that feeling of mental and creative engagement. He claims obsession is the hallmark of a real designer.
I wonder if that is true?
Are designers just junkies to the thrill of creative engagement? Are the feelings of loss at the end of a project the price we must pay for the thrill of being mentally and emotionally connected to our work? Is the cure to be more disciplined and strive to achieve some semblance of work/life balance or are we doomed to this emotional cycle of obsession and loss?
Last week I shared my dilemma with some friends who are in recovery from alcohol addiction. They said the acknowledgment of being consumed and obsessed by something and the feelings of loss once it’s taken away are similar to how alcoholics feel during recovery. They shared it’s recommended alcoholics seeking sobriety attend 90 Alcoholics Anonymous meetings in 90 days. The theory is that through the daily ritual of the AA meetings, alcoholics learn to understand their relationship to alcohol and can then develop the skills necessary to cope and deal with their addiction.

Now Read This Site Better With Mobiles

I decided to do this because more and more users are using their mobiles to browse the internet. Despite being a mobile internet evangelist for the last 10 years or so, I currently don’t use my phone for more than making calls and sending emails and SMSs. This is because my Sony Ericsson is just too clunky to do anything that doesn’t involve the keyboard as the touch screen is too hard to use. If I want to use the internet I have to get the stylus out which is a disaster as I’m left trying to browse using my fingers, the stylus and the keyboard which is just too fiddley. It’s also too slow. I hate wanting to do something simple like getting a number, and then having to wait because the phone has randomly decided to freeze for a few mins.
I’ve decided that I’m going to replace my Sony Ericsson X1 with an iPhone 3G S. The UI is just amazing and although I’m very anti-Apple because I hate getting on the bandwagon, I’ve (grudgingly) had to concede that the iPhone is the best phone on the market, just like the iPod is the best mp3 player. If I’m not careful I might end up paying through the nose in a few years and buying a mac

Mobiles boost Africa climate data

Gaping gaps in weather and climate data across Africa may be filled by a partnership between humanitarian groups and mobile phone companies, reports the BBC.
The project aims to deploy 5,000 automatic weather stations across the continent mounted on phone masts.
They will gather data on aspects of weather such as rainfall and wind, and send it to national weather agencies.
Former UN chief Kofi Annan says the project could help save lives of people on "the frontlines of climate change".
"The world's poorest are also the world's most vulnerable when it comes to the impact of climate change, and the least equipped to deal with its consequences," he said.
"Today you find cell phone towers in almost every part of Africa. We have never been able to establish weather monitoring on that scale, until now."

Scrolling Recommendations

Limit markup size to what the device can comfortably handle. This sounds obvious, but the “comfortably” bit is important, too. We’ve seen web sites that would render on a Motorola RAZR, but were so heavy that the device didn’t have any capacity to spare for moving the cursor in a timely fashion.
Ensure users have a reason to scroll. Make the top part of your page/screen compelling. Avoid closure, false bottoms. Create expectations that more is below. This is especially important on landing pages.
Use just-in-time fetching for infinite lists. For applications and browsers that support Javascript, don’t fetch a new page at all; instead add items at the bottom of the list as the user nears it. You can remove items at the top if you run out of memory. The Gmail Java ME application does this very well.
Provide accelerators for certain lists. Opera Mini uses left and right to page-scroll up and down in some modes. Openwave browsers support volume up and down for page scrolling. The iPhone Address Book provides letter shortcuts and handles the problem of the letter being too small by only using it to scroll to a spot, rather than filter. Some sites have within-page navigation.
Reduce page length by:
Using only key navigation links (maybe just Home) rather than a full set on every page.
Providing the first few items of a topic area, like the first 5 comments, and linking to a full list of comments
Only putting the spacing needed for touch users on touch devices

Mobile phones, masts and health

Mobile phones are improving communication all over the world. They help change people’s lives for the better by creating access to services and enabling economic development. For many of us, they are already an everyday part of our lives. Although there is no evidence to convince experts that the use of mobile phones and the masts that make them work carries health risks, some people are still concerned.Safeguarding the health and safety of our customers, employees and the public is paramount. Our vision is to lead the industry in responding to public concerns regarding mobile phones, masts and health by demonstrating leading edge practices and encouraging others to follow.

Africa: An Emerging Market?

Africa is a continent which is inhabited by roughly 1 billion people. Astoundingly, the "Dark Continent" has been a fertile market for the mobile industry, with 300 million Africans currently carrying an active mobile account. This is an adoption rate of around 30% on a continent that is not known for having an affluent population.
In some African countries, mobile adoption nears 80-90%. Specifically in South Africa, which has a population of 47 million people, 42 million carry and use mobile networks.
Like the rest of the world, excluding North America, most African mobile customers opt for pre-paid mobile phone accounts. In South Africa, only 10% choose to have a service agreement with a specific mobile network operator. In some African countries, pre-paid customers account for 95-96% of the mobile customer base.

Apps bolster iphone in business, but AT&T remains an obstacle

Fast forward to April 2009. With the announcement of the iPhone 3.0 software in March and the third generation iPhone expected to be unveiled by the middle of 2009, I decided that it was time for TechRepublic to start paying more attention to the iPhone again and to revisit the iPhone App Store to see if there is anything in there to make it more compelling to the corporate world.
So I dug out the iPhone 3G, put it in a Griffin case with a ZAGG InvisibleSheild , loaded a bunch of iPhone apps, and started regularly carrying it as a Wi-Fi device. The timing was good since I’ve been traveling a lot this spring, so I’ve been able to test it like a true road warrior.
I’ve been pretty surprised and impressed. This time around, the iPhone has proven to be far more useful, and it’s entirely due to the software.

GSM

The Global System for Mobile communications is the most popular cellular approach in the world. According to the GSM Association, there were more than 2 billion GSM subscribers worldwide by June, 2008, which the organization said is more than 86 percent of the world's cellular market. GSM was accelerated earlier this decade by Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) and is in the process of further speed boosts by High Speed Downlink Packet Access and High Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSDPA and HSUPA) approaches.

Opera Mobile 9.7b1

Opera Turbo in Opera Mobile is still a preview-feature;
Downloads don't work while Opera Turbo is enabled.
Some settings (such as toggle on/off images) do not apply when Opera Turbo is enabled.
On older WM 5.0 Devices with 480x800 resolution, switching between portrait and landscape may cause display errors. This is due to lack of support for this resolution in early versions of Microsoft's driver.
Some input method editors are known not to work well with Opera because they do not comply with Microsoft's SIP and/or IME standard. When such an editor is detected by Opera, Opera will use a known (default) input method instead. An exception is EzInput v1.5, where the phone keypad and compact QUERTY, ABC mode doesn't work, but the rest of the modes work fine. We recommend upgrading to EzInput v2.0 to avoid this.
Only support for FlashLite 3.x. No Flash plugin included

Mobile payment user demographics: Myth vs Fact

We recently conducted a consumer survey to better understand our customers’ customers. As marketers, the downside to having a frictionless end user payment experience is that we don’t always know a lot about the people making the payments. How old are you? Why did you select the “Pay by mobile” option? Do you even have a bank account? These are the kinds of questions our survey was designed to answer.
Here’s what we learned, in classic “Myth vs Fact” format:
Myth - Mobile payment users are just a bunch of 12 year olds using their parent’s cell phones to make payments.Fact - Over 88% of mobile payment users are 18 or older. The distribution skews younger with about 60% between 18 and 30 years old.
Myth - Mobile payment users only use mobile because they don’t have bank accounts or credit cards.Fact - 76% of mobile payment users have a bank account or credit card.
Mobile payment users have plenty of options, which begs the question, “why do you use your mobile phone to pay?”
We’re glad we asked:
34% said they used mobile because “it’s fast and easy”22% said because “it’s fun”20% said because “i know it will work”14% said because “it doesn’t seem like I’m spending real money”10% said because “i don’t have a bank account or credit card”
Folks, mobile payments are becoming mainstream.Good stuff.

Consumer

MMA's Commitment to Consumer Satisfaction
The MMA’s primary focus is on consumer protection and privacy, given the importance of consumer satisfaction in maintaining a sustainable industry and promoting growth.
The MMA therefore strives to align its members and industry stakeholders generally with consumers needs and wants to ensure a positive mobile experience. There are six fundamental elements to a positive consumer experience. They are:
Choice. The consumer must “opt-in” to a mobile marketing program. Consumers have a right to privacy and marketers must therefore gain approval from consumers before content is sent, and include clear directions on how to unsubscribe from communication should it become unwanted.
Control. Consumers should have control of when and how they receive marketing messaging on the mobile phone and must be allowed to easily terminate or “opt-out” of an unwanted program.
Customisation. Data supplied by the consumer for marketing purposes should be used to tailor such marketing to the interests of the consumer (e.g. restricting communications to those categories specifically requested by the consumer.). Targeting user consumer data made available to the marketer helps to eliminate spam, making content as relevant and useful to the consumer as possible.
Consideration. The consumer must receive or be offered something of perceived value in return for receiving the communication (product and service enhancements, entry into competitions etc.).
Constraint. The marketer must effectively manage and limit mobile messaging programs to a reasonable number of programs.
Confidentiality. Commitment to not sharing consumer information with non-affiliated third-parties.

Mobile Numbers of Girls For Sale

For the last two weeks, I was harassed, annoyed, cajoled and threatened by some anonymous and obnoxious calls by some five or six persons on my cell number. Initially when one or two guys called me, I took it as routine missed calls in which people tried to exploit the fluke. But then it became a norm, and I was reIt’s hard to believe but every day in the last two week, I received some 30 or 40 wrong calls on average from different unique numbers on my mobile phone. The experience was horrible. Every one was polite initially. Their objective was same and that was to strike a lasting friendship with the girl on the other side of the mobile. The frightening thing was that though they didn’t know my name and whereabouts (though some pretended that they knew), but they were roughly aware of my visage. The method of every person was more or less same, though some tried to innovate it. Average callers called me, apologized to me for disturbing me, then asked for my permission to say ‘something’, and then they introduced themselves, and then told me that how lonely they were, and how badly they wanted a sincere friend like me. Initially I didn’t talk to them, and I used to cut off the connection, as soon as I realized its yet another wrong call.
But when it went out of hand, then I tried to reason with the callers. They took it as a cue for further advances. They poured sagas of love and humanity and friendship in my ear, and they quoted the verses of Ghalib and Zauq. They sent me the sms full of love and romance quotes, and they sent me flowers, and roses and hearts in sms. I was thoroughly insulted through mobile mania. Then I let loose my anger, and whoever called me received my severe abuse and rebuttal. I thought that it would shut their mouths tight, and they would look elsewhere.ally listened to some horrible music.

How to Save a Wet Cell Phone

Ever dropped your cell phone in the sink, or even worse... the toilet? Did you ever leave it in your pocket and run it through the washer?
How to Save a Wet Cell Phone?
Did you ever swim with your cell phone in your pocket? It usually means you have to replace your phone, but sometimes if you're fast, you can save the phone!
1-Get it out of the water as soon as possible. The plastic covers on cell phones are fairly tight, but water can enter the phone in a short period of time, perhaps only 20 seconds or less. So grab your phone quickly! If you can't get to it in time, your best bet is to remove the battery while it is still under water. Water helps dissipate heat from shorts that can damage the phone, so most damage occurs when the inside of the phone is merely wet and there is a power source.
2-Don't Panic. Your phone will probably not be too damaged if you right away take it out of the water. While it's in the water, immediately take it out.
3-Remove the battery. This is one of the most important steps. Don't take time to think about it; electricity and water do not mix. Cutting power to your phone is a crucial first step in saving it. Many circuits inside the phone will survive immersion in water provided they are not attached to a power source when wet.
4-If you have a GSM carrier, remove your SIM card. Some or all of your valuable contacts (along with other data) could be stored on your SIM. To some people this could be more worth saving than the phone itself. SIM cards survive water damage well, but some of the following steps are unnecessary i.e. don't heat it. Just pat it dry and leave it aside until you need to connect your phone to your cellular network. (This step does not apply to CDMA carriers such as Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Sprint, etc.)
5-Dry your phone. Obviously you need to remove as much of the water as soon as possible, so you can save it from getting into the phone. Shake it out without dropping it, then use a towel or paper towel (ideally trying not to clog the wet paper in the gaps and grooves of the phone) to gently remove as much of the remaining water as possible. Dry the excess moisture by hand.

Google Mobile App for S60

The homescreen shortcut uses either ‘c’ key or the ‘pencil’ key depending on which device you are using. There’s an optional prompt that pops up a reminder of the shortcut (see first screenshot - it used just be the pencil key on supported devices), but this can be turned off if you wish.

Above is an example of a basic Google search for ‘pub’. With ‘My Location’ enabled an appropriate set of local results is offered automatically. The My Location feature ties in with and uses ‘My Location’ from Google Maps (Latitude). Either the device’s GPS or cell-positioning can be used to obtain current location information.
The location specific search is a very useful way to find a service, shop or other object that is physically near by without having to worry about where you are or how to enter your current location. As well as business listings, you can also get information about local event listings (e.g. cinema film times). This is exactly the sort of search that is most useful in a mobile context. It is a neat solution, which has been slickly implemented.

Europeans hang up on fixed lines

Lithuania heads the nations who have turned against landlines with 48% of households replacing a fixed phone with a mobile. Finland was second with 47%.
The figures from Eurostat, the EC's in-house statistical office, show how mobile phones have become essential to everyday European life.
It reports there are now 95 mobile phones for every 100 Europeans.
While the average across 25 EU member nations is 18% the figures reveal a divide between old and new Europe in commitment to fixed phones.
Older members of the EU, such as the UK (13%) and Germany (11%), tended to have fewer mobile-only homes compared to newcomers such as the Czech Republic which has 42%.
A partial explanation for the difference could be that fixed line penetration in many newer, former communist, EU members was never as high as it was in nations such as France and the UK.
